Depressing Breakup Songs
There are many sad breakup songs, but few are so intense that they are downright depressing. Let’s explore those in this post.
And if you’re curious, here my my list of some of the best sad love songs.
The first such song explores a situation where the breakup is felt over a lifetime of living with regret!
Dreams I Weave by Alex Genadinik
This song was translated from the great Russian poet and songwriter Bulat Okudzhava. I first translated the song. After that, I added a bridge at the end, and added more production. At this point it’s less of a cover, and more of an original song inspired by the original.
The song is about a couple who are apart, but dream of each other. But when they finally meet, they can’t find the right words to say or the right actions to take, and bumble through their meeting, eventually parting only to live in regret forever. Here is a page with full lyrics and longer analysis of this song about longing.
November Rain by Guns N’ Roses
This song features an emotional vocal performance that makes you feel energy while wanting to cry at the same time. It also has a great metaphor or November rain, which helps you immediately picture a mood and a feeling. This is actually one of the most masterful and effective uses of metaphors in song lyrics. Rain can also be a metaphor for tears or crying, which is implied in the feel of this song as well as the vocal performance and obviously the lyrics too.
Talking To The Moon by Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars has a way of making songs extremely catchy. He is a great vocalist, and always finds unique ways to make ordinary lines sound enchanting and unique. Even if it’s a depressing song like this.
