Best Love Songs Of All Time

In this blog post, let’s examine the best love songs from each of the past 7 decades from a few genres of music, and pick the best love song of all time.

Join me on this nostalgic journey through decades of love and melody. Let’s revisit the songs that moved hearts and shaped memories.

Best Love Songs Of The 50s

The best love song of the 50s is arguably Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. This masterpiece has remained a classic, and has been covered by many great singers. It’s still incredibly emotional, and the vocal performances of the Righteous Brothers are timelessly touching.

This song’s emotional depth and powerful vocal delivery continue to resonate with listeners decades after it was released. The passion and vulnerability in the performance make it a masterpiece of romantic expression.

Another classic love song from the 50s is Only You by The Platters. From the very first line, the song captures your attention with its distinctive doo-wop sound and the heartfelt, soaring vocals that define the era’s romantic style.

Best Love Songs Of The 60s

The best love song from the ’50s might just be Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love. Although technically released in 1961, the song carries the romantic charm and musical style of the ’50s, making it feel right at home in that decade. Regardless of its exact year, the song remains completely timeless — tender, heartfelt, and filled with genuine emotion.

My Girl by the Temptations was released in 1964, but also has that ’50s feel. It’s another great love song.

Best Love Songs Of The 70s

How Can I Tell You by Cat Stevens is a sweet and endearing love song released in 1971.

Another great one from the ’70s is How Deep Is Your Love by The Bee Gees.

There are too many great tunes from the ’70s, so I am adding a third candidate to this list, and that is Fernando by ABBA.

Best Love Songs Of The ’80s

I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder is such a great and sweet love song. It belongs on all lists of top love songs.

Another song that belongs here is Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time.

The ’80s were a tremendous decade for music, so we need more candidates for the best love song from this decade. A worthy candidate of the best love song of the ’80s is Chris De Burgh’s Lady In Red.

Best Love Songs Of The ’90s

This song feels like an ’80s song, but it’s from the ’90s. It’s emotional, and truly romantic.

Best Love Songs Of 2000s

One of my favorite songs is Ellie Goulding’s How Long Will I Love You. If you listen to one of the tunes from the ’70s – Cat Stevens’ song How Can I Tell – some of the melody sounds very similar. Perhaps this song is inspired by Cat’s song.

John Legend’s All Of Me must also make this list. This tune has incredible energy! The listener can truly feel the love the lead vocalist is expressing.

Best Love Song Lyrics

If you don’t mind, I added a few of my original songs to this list. Obviously my tracks aren’t on the same level as the other masterpieces on this list, but I added them because of the lyrics. I love writing poetry and poetic song lyrics. If you’d be so kind as to give my music a try, here are a few of my original love songs:

My most romantic song, Oh Michelangelo reimagines the classic painting painting by Michelangelo as a tender touch of two lovers. Here is a page with full lyrics, and a longer analysis of this passionate love song.

Another song I wrote uses a line from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, which does happen to be one of the best love lyrics of all time. After all, it’s Shakespeare’s original line.

Lastly, I couldn’t move on without posting this song about my crush on Audrey Hepburn.

Best Country Love Song

My pick for the most romantic Country love song with the best lyrics is A Little Past Little Rock by Lee Ann Womack. Her music is honest and emotional. She is one of my favorite country singers. I know this isn’t a romantic song. It’s a breakup song. But nevertheless, I choose this one.

Best R&B Love Song

Toni Braxton’s Unbreak My Heart

The Winner Of The Best Love Song Of All Time

All the songs listed on this page are great love songs. There are also hundreds of honorable mentions for the prize of the best love songs which didn’t make this list. In my view, the best love song of all time is John Legend’s All Of Me.

The poetic lyrics and honest words of love combined with a great vocal performance and energy make this the winner!
